Congratulations to the members of the Lady Cardinal golf team on their successes over the weekend at the State UIL Golf Tournament. Here’s a brief recap from Coach Jones:
On the first day of tournament play we shot a combined 341, led by seniors Sydney Williams and Macie Seeker with a pair of 76’s. At the end of the day we were 23 shots behind first place Sonora, who fired a 318. Friday brought some pretty awesome stuff our way though. We shot a combined score of 314 (69, 74, 81, 90) which breaks our former low score of 324 and also sets a new school record. Our personal best of 314 would secure 1st runner up for the Lady Cardinals.
The magic really started happening on the back nine when senior Sydney Williams began making a charge for the individual state title. After starting the day five shots out of the lead Sydney battled her way back, coming into hole 17 all square with two-time defending state champion Liz Chavarria of Sonora. After shooting her personal best, and new school record of 69 Sydney sat tied for the gold medal with Chavarria with a two day total of 145. On the third hole of a sudden death playoff Sydney drained a 15 foot putt for par to secure her state title. Sydney is the first ever individual state champion in Melissa history. RED RED!! If you should see any of these girls in the near future please congratulate them for a job very well done.
Team members include:
