A NEW SYSTEM OF STATE ASSESSMENTS

Beginning in the 2011–12 school year the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is implementing the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) program, which includes new assessments in grades 3 through 8 and development of twelve end-of-course (EOC) assessments for students in grades 9 through 12 and 8th graders in Algebra I. STAAR phases out the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) program, in place since 2003. These students must perform successfully on the STAAR/EOC assessments to graduate. To graduate on the Recommended or Advanced/Distinguished Achievement Programs, students must also meet performance targets, or cumulative scores, on the EOC assessments.  TEA will be releasing performance standards in late February 2012.

TEA requires the EOC assessment to be 15% of the student’s final course grade starting with the Freshmen of 2011-2012.  The following was distributed and explained to students on February 3rd:  2011-2012 Freshmen grade calculation.  Parents who would like further information and/or have question are invited to attend our Freshmen Parent Information Night on February 13th at MHS at 6:30.
