Please join Melissa I.S.D. in congratulating the Melissa High School Computer Science Team, and team sponsor Mr. Glenn Whitten, on their recent strong showing at the University Interscholastic League State Championship in Austin. The team finished in 3rd place. Team members include Christian Leithner, Brandon Sides, Clay Braley, and Ben Spicer. Christian Leithner also placed 3rd in the individual portion of the contest. Way to go Cards!

In light of recent inclement weather in the Metroplex and Oklahoma, Melissa I.S.D. has received several phone calls asking about parental pick-up of students in the event of possible tornadic activity. For your planning purposes, please refer to the following guidelines:

In the Event of a Tornado Watch

A National Weather Service Tornado Watch is a designation that indicates that conditions are conducive to the possibility of tornadic activity. Since a Tornado Watch is not an indication of imminent danger, parents may pick-up students by means of the normal checkout process in the school office.

In the Event of a Tornado Warning

A National Weather Service Tornado Warning is a designation that indicates a high likelihood of tornadic activity. A tornado may be on the ground, or there may be strong evidence that dictates the need to take precautionary shelter immediately.

• In the event of a Tornado Warning, schools will follow these steps:
• Students and staff will initiate shelter-in-place procedures;
• Anyone immediately outside the building will be directed to enter the building to shelter in a separate location than students;
• Because we will be in the process of sheltering students, no students will be released during a tornado warning;
• Because we will be in the process of sheltering students, phone calls will not be answered during a tornado warning;
• Once the front doors have been locked and the shelter-in-place protocol has been initiated, no one will be allowed to enter or leave the building.

The protocol outlined above is a part of the Melissa I.S.D. Emergency Readiness plan and was developed in conjunction with local and regional emergency management professionals. Once  a Tornado Warning has been lifted, and weather conditions have been deemed safe, all campuses will revert back to normal dismissal procedures.

What an exciting weekend for the Melissa Cardinal Baseball team.  We beat the Argyle Eagles in a best of 3 series 2 games to 1.  On Thursday we let them slip by us losing game 1 8-9.  Friday we came storming back with a 12-10 win after being down 5-0.  And Saturday we got down 3-0 before coming back to win in dominating fashion 13-4.  Congratulations Coach Joe Williams and the Melissa Cardinal Baseball team.

This week we play Longview Springhill in a best of 3 series.  Game 1 will be Thursday in Lindale @ 7:30.  Saturday we will play game 2 @ Sunnyvale @ 2 PM.  Game 3 will be 30 minutes after game 2 if needed.  We will be the home team on Thursday and the visitor on Saturday.  Game 3 will be decided by a coin flip to determine home or visitor.

Please join us on Friday, May 24th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. for the 8th annual Melissa Cardinals Kids’ Inquiry Conference where 5th and 6th grade students share their excitement and discoveries about math, science, technology, and engineering. These scientists developed their own testable question and procedures, evaluated the credibility of their own research and testing, and created a presentation to draw on the excitement and discoveries of others. This event provides concurrent sessions all day, so feel free to come and go as you please. Sessions will break for lunch from approximately 11:30-12:30. The Cardinal baseball team will play Argyle this week in the next round of the playoffs.  Games have been set to take place at Frisco High School baseball field, 6927 Stadium Lane, Frisco, TX 75034.  We play Thursday and Friday at 7:30 and if needed Saturday at 12:00.  The ticket prices will be $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students.  The passes that will be accepted at the gate will be THSCA, THSBCA, Senior, and District passes.  The fan support at McKinney Boyd last week was amazing.  I know our players really appreciate everyone coming out to support our team because it creates an awesome atmosphere.  - Coach Williams.
